Domaine de Montbourgeau – L’Etoile 2010

I had this wine about nine or ten months ago for the first time whole having dinner at St Johns in Chattanooga.  This was also my first experience with a wine from the Jura region of France. It made a huge impression and since then I had been seeking to gain access to more bottles to enjoy…..and I got some. 🙂

So this wine is primarily Chardonnay, but it may be unlike any Chard you have ever had before. The wine is a nice gold straw color….and then you put your nose in the glass and it begins.  The nose on this wine is big and very expressive, I get almond, under ripe green apple, a lot of sherry, and earthy clayesque soil….really rustic and complex.  In the mouth I found the wine to be very smooth, with light fruit of apple and pear along with a really nice acidity.  This wine is really cool, probably not your everyday white wine but a wine of great contrast and complexity that needs time to sit and enjoy.

Brovia Dolcetto D’Alba – Vignavillej 2011

Any time an importer does tastings in town we always try to get there to find something new. What a great way to try multiple wines with out blindly trying bottles. Recently the Rosenthal Wine Merchant rep was at Riverside Wine. Rosenthal is one of our favorite importers specializing in French, Italian and Spanish wines…..pretty much what we drink the most.  After tasting many great wines I decided to grab a bottle of my favorite of the line up the Brovia Dolcetto D’Alba.

The wine is very dark purple in color with no translucency.  It has a bold nose of dark fruit, initially I got blueberry but as the wine got air the dark cherry came out along with some licorice, light spice and leather. In the mouth the wine is big and bold with dark fruit notes and medium plus grippy tannins. You can definitely feel this wine which high in character with great stucture and really lingers in your mouth. I drank this bottle over the course of two evenings, a little air does it good, I would decant if I planned to drink the bottle in one evening.
